Assessment
At BMGS, assessment is a key tool used to gauge learners' understanding, progress, and areas for improvement. Guided by the principles set out by the Department for Education (DfE) and Ofsted, our approach to assessment is thorough, inclusive, and designed to support both teaching and learning.
While a significant portion of our assessment data is gathered through ongoing questioning and close monitoring of classroom work, we also implement structured Key Assessment Pieces (KAPs) across all subjects. These KAPs are designed to ensure that each learner consistently demonstrates their knowledge and skills throughout the academic year. Each learner completes one Key Assessment Piece per term in each of their subjects.
Our assessment strategy is built on the foundation of high expectations and the belief that every learner can succeed. The KAPs are strategically planned and sequenced to align with the curriculum, ensuring that students are assessed on the knowledge and skills that are most critical to their development at each stage. These assessments serve multiple purposes: they provide teachers with the insights needed to adjust instruction, offer students opportunities to reflect on their learning, and ensure that we can effectively track progress against the ambitious targets set for all learners.
Moreover, our assessment practices are inclusive and equitable, catering to the diverse needs of our student body, including those with special educational needs and disabilities (SEND) and disadvantaged students. We ensure that all learners have access to the assessments in ways that allow them to demonstrate their understanding fully.
The data gathered from these assessments play a crucial role in our overall educational approach. They not only inform classroom teaching but also contribute to a broader understanding of each learner’s academic journey. This data is used to identify areas where additional support may be needed, to recognise and celebrate achievements, and to ensure that every student is on track to reach their full potential.
In summary, the assessment process at BMGS is integral to our commitment to providing a high-quality education. It reflects our dedication to fostering a learning environment where every student can thrive, supported by rigorous, transparent, and meaningful evaluation practices.
