For nearly 25 years Eco-Schools has been empowering children to drive change and improve their environmental awareness through the simple Seven-Step framework in order to achieve the international Eco-Schools Green Flag award.
Eco-Schools develop pupils’ skills, raise environmental awareness, improve the school environment and create financial savings for schools as well as a whole host of other benefits.
We are trying to be more environmentally friendly and play our part in society and so, in 2018, the school’s Eco committee was formed. Eco Warriors is a group of student volunteers working together to improve the sections which they have chosen to focus on. The topics were chosen following an Environmental Review of the school, the results of which are displayed on our notice board.
Disposing of waste has huge environmental impacts and can cause serious problems. And so, as a school the Eco Warriors are tackling the issues of waste and recycling by introducing paper and plastic bins to recycle materials so waste in the school can reduce drastically. We are also setting up a crisp packet recycling scheme in partnership with Terracycle.
To increase the biodiversity around school grounds the Eco Warriors plan to establish a wildlife garden, with wildflowers and bug hotels to encourage greater biodiversity in the school grounds. We are currently collecting materials with which to build our bug hotels and donations are welcome.
For this topic, the Eco Warriors want to start a pen pal scheme. With the help of our languages department students will have pen pals from around the world. This is beneficial for the student’s language improvement as well as communication skills and will help develop our understanding of what it is to be a citizen in a global community.
Our efforts so far have already earned us our Bronze award and we are well on our way to Silver!
